Is your computer running slow? Did it start out slow? Or did it gradually slow down little by little over time? Improving your computer's performance is likely much easier and less expensive than you thought. There are several factors that go into determining just how fast your computer is going to run in any given situation and some can be changed very inexpensively. Most computers that I come across are deficient in memory. Memory is another word for RAM and RAM has dropped substantially in price. Another thing I see a lot is programs that are running all the time even when they are not being used. Most programs will do this automatically if you choose the “recommended” settings when you install them. Some programs will even do this if you don’t choose the “recommended” settings. Why? Each manufacturer wants you to get the most use and the best experience out of their software. So they want it to load automatically, every time Windows starts. But, the result of having all your programs run automatically every time Windows starts is that you don’t have enough resources to go around. By the time everything starts, your computer is moving at a crawl. When you try to surf the internet or do other activities on your computer everything takes a long time. Even a few seconds is a long time because it starts adding up.
The solution to this is easy. Even though you may have told these programs that they could run all the time when you installed them, it’s not too late to change your mind. Even the programs that didn’t ask your permission can be reset so that they don't start automatically. All of these programs will start automatically once you click on their icon. So, they don’t need to be running all the time. They only need to run when you’re using them. For those of you that are willing to take this on yourself, just do an internet search on “config.sys” and “run registry” and you will find plenty of instructions on how to do this.
